I'm not glad I did this, because while I do love stuff like this involving replication, especially on a cellular level, the tutorial it came from was all over the place. Pigeon-holed myself into a space where I've spent hours doing something that I feel I have to continue with because I didn't want those hours wasted for nothing.
Did some messing around in After Effects to get something slightly decent because I don't want to put any more time into this. Not sure if Houdini 17 & 17.5 have that much of a difference but I followed the guide and it just kept breaking at different point to the stage I had to use the hip file to copy and paste because even going in and making sure everything was matching still wasn't enough. While I can't help but feel this would have been so much easier to create in Maya, I imagine it would have involved a lot of deleting history in that case. I never want to see another attr wrangle again... Candle simulation with an eerie blue tone.
Candle asset from Raffi Bedross FX TD. Another part of the 'Intro to Houdini' series on Udemy.
Wasn't able to get rid of all the noise/grain, which is unfortunate, but the render took a couple of hours so once I increase my RAM, I'll give it another go through and increase the volume control and padding. Tire asset from Raffi Bedross FX TD. Quick simulation of fluid in a container with a bit of animation to move it around.
Doing the Houdini course on Udemy just to get myself to better grips with the software, and the differences between the versions.
The smoke emission wasn't as smokey so I added a blur to the footage in After Effects. Cigarette asset from Raffi Bedross FX TD. Not as good as I wanted it to be but wasn't wasting any more time. I'll come back to this and improve it once I get that rocket science degree needed to understand Houdini ;)
I don't know what went wrong in mine as the cache kept giving errors and the render had a jumping watermark (I masked it out and added a proper one) I'll come back to this at a different point as the render takes over an hour with the cache and three without. Followed along to Nine Between, who has this on YouTube as well as part of a Patreon subscription. Decided to test out my compositing skills by creating this volcano eruption in Houdini, then compositing and adding more effects in After Effects.
The Houdini part was the easiest to do and I managed to get a fairly decent render out in under two hours. I used an old Houdini 12 tutorial as a guide which is still available on the SideFX website. In After Effects I stretched out the time to make it go slower. it go slower. I wasn't able to get it to look the way I wanted so decided to do some comping of footage from RocketStock. The volcano background is Mount Agung in Eastern Bali, Indonesia, which hadn't erupted for a while but did a few hours after making this video. Part 1 of the Applied Houdini lessons by the amazing Steve Knipping, who so graciously helped me out when one of the parts wasn't working for me (curse you naming conventions)
