This was the main assignment for HND1 Life Drawing class in Animation. The brief was to create a character in motion, I did mine as a medieval knight in mid swing of a sword.
For HND2 Conceptual Practice class in VFX, I decided to go back to the drawing I had done and improve upon it as the original was done with a mouse in Photoshop, and I had since then both improved in Photoshop and got a graphic display.
I designed my character to be that of a villain more specifically, an ancient villain. It is based on a Knight Templar during the Medieval Ages. This gave me a large time frame to work with starting from when they became active in 1119 until the end of the Templar order in 1312 by decree of Pope Clement V. The Second Crusade (1145 - 1149) and The Third Crusade (1189 - 1192) fall during this time, which is an interesting period to look at.
I chose to have my character in this period as I love history and really like the medieval period as well as the Templar Order. I haven’t decided yet which location I want to have them in but have narrowed it down to either Jerusalem, during the crusades where they had a headquarters, or France, where the order ended. For Jerusalem it would be during a battle and for France it would be during the burning at the stake of the last members.

New Piece
To alter the environment of the character I composited them on different screenshots from various games such as Assassin’s Creed Unity, Destiny, & Shadow of Mordor that I took using my PS4 while I was playing the game, which makes them unique. This allowed me to show the character in a different light.
I also added some effects to it to enhance the appeal, while serving as a distinction from the other images.

Original Piece - Character In Motion
The original final render with the colour palette, as well as the first design I did along with the in motion one.
I was never really happy with this when I did it because of how limited I was with using a mouse. Going back and getting to redo it has been much more enjoyable.

References
For research I used frames from films set in the past, particularly ‘300’ (2007 – Zack Snyder) & its sequel ‘300: Rise of an Empire’ (2014 – Noam Murro), I drew these out roughly in a notebook next to print outs of the scenes. I also used the film ‘The Last Templar’ (2009 – Paolo Barzman). I also researched various historical clothing and depictions of the Knights Templar and other medieval groups such as the Knights Hospitaller and other crusader soldiers.
I also used the video game Assassin’s Creed: Unity (2014), which comes with a model viewer that allows you to view the character, Arno Dorian, in various clothing and holding a multitude of weapons (also in my notebook). As well as the video game and animated adaption of Dante’s Inferno (2010 – Jonathan Knight & Steven Barry) (2010 - Mike Disa, Shukō Murase, Yasuomi Umetsu, Victor Cook, Jong-Sik Nam, Kim Sang-jin, Lee Seung-Gyu).
